The Barranco de la Maimona is one of the torrents that flow into the Mijares River as it passes through Montanejos.
It originates near the Sierra de Pina, specifically in the town of San Agustín, in the neighbouring province of Teruel. With a length of 39.5 km, its flow depends largely on rainfall. However, it is attractive to visit at any time of the year as it is a route that has no seasonality, it is attractive both in the rainy season and in the dry season.
Throughout history, Montanejos has experienced numerous floods from the Maimona River, which led to the construction of a containment dam in the 1980s to mitigate their impact.

Orography and climbing in the Barranco de la Maimona
The Barranco de la Maimona is a popular destination for climbing enthusiasts, with more than 400 sport climbing routes and multi-pitch routes , distributed in various sectors throughout its complex orography, making it one of the most visited places by these enthusiasts in Montanejos.
It is one of the most demanded destinations in the town as it has spectacular and diverse photographs with several descents of pools at different heights… Of course! It is a place recommended only for climbing professionals as it has risky areas due to its wild state and its complicated orography that makes it not suitable for all audiences.

Landscapes of the Maimona
The most impressive and spectacular section is in Montanejos, from Calpes to its junction with the Mijares. Here, the ravine opens between reddish walls more than 60 metres high , creating narrow straits that sometimes do not exceed five metres. This landscape is a true wonder that is one of the main attractions for the town of Montanejos.
In the upper area of the Maimona, the closest to Calpes, the ravine narrows creating a gorge with deep pools that, with the water of the rainy season, become impressive pools and waterfalls in which to bathe and cool off. Of all of them, “La Campana” stands out: a narrow pool of water with a large rock embedded in it. The ideal way to enter and explore this difficult-to-access area is by taking the Bojera hiking path, or accessing it from the descent next to Puente Nuevo.
